Tough news for us peregrinos planning on making it to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela this year.

It's just been announced that beginning 28 January 2019 and continuing for 12 months the Cathedral will be undergoing major interior renovations. The daily Pilgrims Mass will be offered at the Church of S. Francisco.

Peregrinos will still be able to enter the Cathedral from 0900 to 1900 and also be able to embrace the Apostle and even enter the crypt. Masses in different languages will be offered in different churches in the city.

The announcement can be read here translated into English.

Despite this, I'm still greatly looking forward to walking the Camino Primitivo in July, arriving in time for the Feast of St. James. Hope to see you all on the Way.

    Buen Camino,

    Fr. Lance W.

Wow, huge news Bearded! I really found the wandering of the cathedral after both of our caminos was an important connection, so I would be sad to think others may not fully get this touch stone.

Bearded, thanks for the news. The outside of the cathedral was covered with scaffolding during our 2015 and 2017 caminos. We've seen in a few recent YouTube videos that the scaffolding is now mostly removed. Great that we will be able to see a clear view of the outside of the cathedral, but now they are moving their focus to the inside. Thanks for the headsup on the daily pilgrim's mass. Is the Church of San Franciso a separate church and if so, how far from the Cathedral? Bob

The Iglesia de San Francisco is very close to the Cathedral. You can see it on Google maps here.

This is where the Pilgrims Mass will be held for the next 12 months.

Hey Bearded - Please excuse me if I’m wrong here, but I didn’t know one could obtain their Compostela at the Cathedral. The three times that I’ve been there, I’ve always gone to the Pilgrim’s Reception Office at 33 Rúa das Carretas sometimes along with hundreds of other pilgrims. Did this change just in the past few months? I was just their last April. Thanks. Buen Camino!
