What are the toilet facilities like in the hostels and en route in the cafes/bars? Are they clean? Do they have toilet seats, toilet roll etc? Are there any squat toilets (if there are, I'd like to avoid them)?

Most have seats and are clean. Orisson is clean but has a "prisoners" toilet, i.e no seat but otherwise ok.

Haha, thanks for the heads up. I am a bit of a germaphobe, so that's why I ask.

20160505_155523.jpg This was the toilet at Orisson. It and the area around it was very clean.

20170520_025928.jpg In Pamplona there was a full handicap rated bathroom and several more normal toilet/bath rooms with normal seats.

Well, those particular ones look very impressive, maybe you got lucky! Thanks for the photos, that has allayed my fears some what, hopefully most are in that condition (Other people are probably reading this thread thinking...what!?) Haha

20170521_043000.jpg And this is Burgos. Most of the rest were "normal" bathrooms. I wasn't trying to do a survey of bathrooms.

A surprise to my wife and I during our first camino was that some albergues had gender-shared facilities. For example, there might be three toilet stalls (with doors), a few showers (hopefully with curtains), three or four sinks, and sometimes two or three urinals. All were shared by women and men. While there might be limited privacy for the toilets and showers, the urinals were in an open area and visible to anyone that walked into the bathroom.

In addition, there are many different behaviors regarding personal privacy. During our recent camino, my wife was in the bathroom and a young woman finished her shower, opened the curtain and stood there naked drying herself off. Some modest pilgrims got dressed before opening the shower curtain. Others walked around the bathroom or bunkbed area in their underwear.

After walking 15 miles during the day and being exposed to this (sorry for the pun), we got used to it very quickly. No matter who / what you see, it's unlikely you'll see that person again.

Our only problem with the bathrooms were that if you never got in first the shower areas were very wet and it took quite some planning to keep your clothes dry as even the side walls are all wet from steam.
Must say though that we never saw one dirty toilet the full 807km's!!
