Should be open, but you'll need to check at the pilgrim's office on weather conditions. I've read on other posts that there can be snow, mud and windy weather on the Napoleon route even in May. Bob

Hey Terry - I believe that the Napoleon Route opens April 1. I crossed the Pyrenees on April 29 two years ago on the most gorgeous day possible - plenty of sunshine and panoramic views. Although there was a bit of wind in open areas and near the top, shorts and a t-shirt were all that I needed that day. That late in April, there were patches of snow, but not much more than that. However, the following day, pilgrims leaving from SJPP or Orisson had a snow storm to contend with on their crossing. A very different experience! April in the mountains is most unpredictable. The only advice that I can really offer you is to be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best. Buen Camino!

And I crossed 3 days later on May 2nd, my 72nd birthday to clear and cool weather. No snow and as I caught up to those who crossed a day or two earlier couldn’t believe their weather stories. It’s always best to check with the locals on the weather

We crossed on April 14 in 2015 -- couldn't have asked for a more perfect day ... except maybe for the distance. :)

Hi Terry if you meet me you’ll realise this is the last thing I’d think of. My feet get better looked after than the hair

Months with an "R" in their name have always had variable weather conditions. Particularly April used to show extremes from one day to the other. Changes in temperatures and humidity (rain, occasional snow) should be expected. Carry the necessary outfit.

I resume my camino on April 19th at Estella and I hope to have great weather on my journey to Muxia by May 26th. I'm sure it'll be interesting! Look forward to seeing some of you.

Honestly, spring is completely unpredictable. Last year we had full summer weather for 2 weeks, but it's been quite rainy and cold lately. I'd recommend to bring clothing for all kind of weather - a jumper, a raincoat, a pair of thin and thick shirts. Don't think you'll need short pants.
